St. Mary's Catholic Primary School: A Rich History
St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School boasts a remarkable history, tracing back to 1848, making it the oldest school in the Armidale Diocese. This enduring legacy has been shaped by the dedicated service of several religious orders:
- Early Beginnings (1848): Established by lay people, marking the foundation of Catholic education in the region.
- Ursuline Sisters (1882-2001): The Ursuline Sisters arrived in 1882 and played a pivotal role in the school’s development for over a century, leaving an indelible mark on its character and traditions. St. Angela Merici, the founder of the Ursuline Sisters, is honoured in the school’s building names, along with St. Ursula and St. Anne.
- Patrician Brothers (1889-1897): The Patrician Brothers established a boys’ primary school on the site, contributing to the school’s diverse educational heritage.
- De La Salle Brothers (1906-1972): The De La Salle Brothers later re-established the boys’ primary school, continuing the tradition of Catholic education for many decades.
- Lay Administration (2001-Present): Since 2001, St. Mary’s has been under lay administration, continuing to uphold the school’s rich traditions and values.
A Legacy of Service and Community
The school crest and the motto “Serviam” (I will serve) are a testament to the Ursuline influence, connecting St. Mary’s to a wider network of Ursuline schools.
Generations of families have passed through the halls of St. Mary’s, creating a strong sense of community and continuity. This long and storied history provides a strong foundation for the school’s present and future.
